20 years of The Bourne Identity

Image
June 6, 2002 in Los Angeles, California (USA), the premiere of the film "The Bourne Identity." Director Doug Liman. Doug Liman's film was the second film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Robert Ludlum, published and became a bestseller in 1980. The first film adaptation, starring Richard Chamberlin, took place on American television in 1988. Robert Ludlum watched the 1988 film adaptation, but he did not live to see the second film adaptation - he died in 2001. Therefore, it is not known how he would evaluate this film adaptation, the plot of which differs significantly from the first film adaptation and from the novel itself. Some believe that the name, or rather, the initials of the protagonist of his novel, Robert Ludlum gave with a hint of James Bond. But it's not. At least in terms of last name. In fact, the surname Bourne "got" the hero of the novel from Ansel Bourne, a preacher from Rhode Island, the first documented case of "dissociat...

Anniversary of the Fury

Image
On June 5, 1936, the premiere of Fritz Lang's film "Fury" took place in the USA. The film "Fury" was the result of a happy coincidence of several not very happy circumstances. First, in the early 1930s, when Nazism flourished in Germany, manifested primarily in the brutal persecution of Jews, the opposite process began in the United States: the struggle for the rights of blacks intensified. In particular, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) submitted to the US Congress a draft federal law to combat the lynching of blacks. The bill was rejected by the US Senate, and this caused a heated discussion in American society.  Secondly, in 1934, the famous German director Fritz Lang immigrated to the United States, whose mother was Jewish and, therefore, it was extremely dangerous for him to remain in Germany. Finally, thirdly, in 1933 in San Jose, California, two blacks, Thomas Harold Thurmond and John Maurice Holmes, were lynched. Sus...

Director Pietro Germi. 1961.  Movie’s Rating - 8,987. 167th Rank in the Golden Thousand. A lot of publications in the media devoted to Stefania Sandrelli, star and sex symbol of Italian cinema. Laudatory and not very. Certainly, less than, for example, about Marilyn Monroe. Yes, it is understandable: Sandrelli was not the president's mistress. We are not going to do another "analysis" of the work of this Actress. We just want to share memories of our "contact" with this Actress. Sedotta e abbandonata (Seduced and Abandoned). Director Pietro Germi. 1963. Movie’s Rating - 8,066. 630th Rank in the Golden Thousand. The first time I’ve heard the name of...

Three-quarters of a century of the Miracle on 34th Street

Image
On June 4, 1947, George Seaton's "Miracle on 34th Street" premiered at the Roxy Theater in New York City, which has almost 6,000 seats. The idea for the plot of the picture came to Valentine Davies when he was trying to buy a gift for his wife at the end of 1944 in the midst of the Christmas sale. Making his way to the counter through a crowd of excited customers, he began to dream about how great it would be if Santa Claus just gave all the people gifts that would make them happy. From these dreams, a story was born, which Davies offered to his friend from the 20s, George Seaton (real name - Stenius). George Seaton, then an aspiring director, but already an experienced and successful screenwriter working for the Twentieth Century-Fox film company, wrote a screenplay based on the story and received permission from the film company to shoot a film based on this script. A feature of the production of this film was the maximum approximation to real conditions. Filming was d...
